Beautiful Girls
Jane Austen famously begins Pride and Prejudice with “it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife”. So perspective wives flock to men awash with dosh. But surely this is codswallop in Thailand today, considering many Thai women are no longer financially dependent on men.
Yet the myths that women marry for economic reasons endures, and why is that? Is it because women think such men are likely to be more interesting, or lively, or dynamic? Is it for their experience, or for greater stability, or even possibly their patience and understanding? So in reality, are having money a symptom, and not a cause?
Women want men with dosh, men want women posh In my job as a matchmaker, most women, who are beautiful, always ask if I could hook them up with men who are financially more secure than them. Why are women still making the same mistakes over and over again in every day Thai society? Their mistake? They believe that they are in good hands simply because they are marrying into the family with the ‘right’ surname. Many of these families are masked by swanky lifestyles, and only out there spending money to save face! My male clients, on the other hand, generally place greater emphasis on looks. It is not that men don’t care about the women’s status, or that women don’t care about the men’s appearance, but it is rather the relative position that differ between them.
Are beautiful women really that stupid?
Despite a connotation that beautiful women are stupid (and sometimes foolish enough to marry into rich or pseudo- rich families), I found that my more beautiful female clients were in fact smarter and more successful. My observation was supported by a fascinating study done at the London School of Economics called “Why Beautiful People are More Intelligent”, by Satoshi Kanazawa, Jody L. Kovar. They claim that beautiful women are actually smarter because of evolutionary reasons. To be more precise, the study concludes that beautiful people are more intelligent. The conclusion follows from four assumptions: More intelligent men attain a higher status. Higher-status men are more likely to mate with more beautiful women. Intelligence and beauty are inheritable, therefore if all are true it would be a proven theorem that beautiful people are more intelligent. Who ever said life was fair?
Why is there a negative association of beautiful women and stupidity or gold digging then?
A search on the internet of jokes on dumb beautiful women would return thousand of sites. There were two women, a Beautiful and a Plain. They worked together at an office. Everyday they noticed that their female boss left work a little early. So one day they decided that today when the boss left, they would all leave early too. The boss left and so did they. The Plain went home and straight to bed so could get an early start the next morning. The Beautiful went home and walked into the bedroom. She opens the door slowly and saw her husband in bed with her boss, so she shut and the door and left. The next day, the Plain asked the Beautiful if she wants to leave early again. “No,” she says, “yesterday I nearly got caught!” How intelligent women appear to others depends on how they choose to show and on how it is cultivated through investment in education. Being beautiful probably does create opportunities to be successful that may not be available to the plain women without the arduous investment in education. The stereotype of beautiful women after rich men may thus stem from the fact that they rationally choose to invest less than others in education. Beautiful women just simply didn’t have to work as hard to achieve the same results in many circumstances.
Can it get any better for beautiful girls?
Just when you thought beautiful girls have it all, they have more! According to this and other studies beauty is also a sign of good health. Beautiful girls tend to feature a bilateral symmetry face, which means they are more genetically healthy individuals than those which feature asymmetric face. Facial asymmetry increases with genetic disruptions, such as mutations and inbreeding. For survival reason, men are therefore subconsciously programmed to look for beauty as an indicator of good genetic health. Sometimes I just can’t believe what I am writing or the conclusion that I am reaching. I always knew there was a fundamental reason why Thai women are so beautiful and intelligent! It is fascinating, refreshing, and relieving to learn that our beauty is really far from skin deep, and it comes with a hard scientific backing.

‘ More intelligent men attain higher status’
What is intelligence? What is status? I think it is fair to say that most, if not all, men who have come to be regarded as great thinkers, writers, scientists, artists or human-rights activists, and yet lived their whole lives in abject poverty, were highly intelligent; and so the correlation between intelligence and status in life is a dubious one.
What is certain, however, is that none of those great men would have had the slightest chance of getting a date with those beautiful ( sometimes), intelligent (?), Thai women you write about. No wonder Thai society is in turmoil when so many of its women have such shallow, immoral values.
I have never been married to, nor cheated out of large sums of money by, a Thai woman, so bitterness in not my motivation, only a desire to tell the truth. And the truth, Nikki, is that no honourable men of genuine status could ever find long-term happiness with such cold-hearted women.
What, I wonder, would it take to persuade Thai women to judge men on the content of their character, and not on the size of their bank account?

You have to look at the whole evolution and history of male-female relationship to better understand today’s behaviour. The businessman of today is the equivalent of the strong and good hunter of the stoneage. Women had to rely on a strong hunter as a matter of death or life for her family. This is why a man with muscles was supposed to be attractive and this is why it is getting less important and a business suit can be sexy ( because this is the muscles of today’s man ). So a woman’s instinct always pushes her to choose a man capable of bringing back enough food ( well, more than food actually ) back home. This is the ancestor brain at work. Of course women got it all wrong in preferring rich men because usually the good hunter syndrom will not apply only to bring back enough money home, a man who is a good hunter will also chase other younger females. But then we – men – have to remember that this is exactly the same unfairness for them to prefer richer men than for us to prefer more beautiful women…
