I was shocked to learn from an insider source that Thai Airway has no women pilots.  Yes, ladies, not even one! Whilst its rival airlines such as Bangkok Airway, Nok Air and Air Asia have all taken up female pilots.  Bangkok Airway has at least 10 female pilots over the years, while Thai Airway does not even begin to consider a possibility of hiring a female flyer.  Anyone whom applied without an Adam’s apple, is automatically chucked in the rejected piles.  How can a leading company, showing a face and symbol of Thailand globally, be so backward in women’s equality.   

I was thrilled to see the unusally amount of traffic flooded onto http://www.MeetnLunch.com last Friday, not to mention the majority of the visitors that signed up are Thai men. 

What  really brought the smile to my face was when I found the source of this outburst, k. Thongchai, a CEO (I hope I get his title right) of Noble Development wrote a growing report on MeetNLunch as one of the top websites he would recommend for visiting. He put us on par with http://www.Facebook.com , http://www.myspace.com , http://www.flickr.com, http://www.wikipedia.com and http://www.apple.com/itunes, i.e. all the cool websites. 

With MeetNLunch website mentioning right at the top and the only website to have the snapshot in the entire article, our IT person could not be happier, and more pround of his Drupal invention. How many times do you see a Thai website or Thai company being compared to such an International level?

เริ่มที่ web แรก www.meetnlunch.com เป็นบริการ Dating Service ที่เจาะกลุ่มให้บริการสำหรับคนวัยทำงานเริ่มต้นระหว่างอายุ 25 - 35 ปี โดย concept ของ web site นี้ ทำออกมาให้ดูรู้สึกว่าปลอดภัย เช่นนัดพบกันตอนกลางวันเพื่อทานข้าวแล้วจะได้มีโอกาสเรียนรู้กันก่อน ทำให้คนใช้บริการน่าจะมีโอกาสพบกับเพศตรงข้ามที่มีฐานะทางสังคม หรือความสนใจที่ใกล้เคียงกัน ปีใหม่นี้ ถ้าใครตั้งใจว่าจะต้องมีคู่แต่ยังไม่มี ก็น่าจะลองดู

web ที่สอง www.flickr.com สำหรับ web นี้เป็น web ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแสดงรูปถ่าย ไม่ว่าจะถ่ายจากกล้อง digital หรือแม้กระทั่งกล้องมือถือ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งถ้าคุณใช้มือถือที่ต่อกับ internet ได้อย่าง apple iphone คุณสามารถที่จะถ่ายรูปและส่งเข้าไป post ที่หน้าส่วนตัวที่คุณสร้างไว้ได้ทันที โดยไม่ต้อง download รูปออกจากโทรศัพท์ของคุณ นอกจากนี้คุณยังสามารถสร้าง Group ของตัวเองเพื่อที่จะรวบรวมสมาชิกที่สนใจในเรื่องเดียวกับคุณมาสนทนาแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดกันได้ ลองเข้าไปดูที่นี่ก็ได้ครับ http://www.flickr.com/groups/thailand_images/

อีกแนวคิดหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจมากใน internet ในช่วงสองปีที่ผ่านมาคือการสร้าง social networking web site เช่น www.facebook.com ซึ่งปัจจุบันมีสมาชิกมากกว่า 150 ล้านคนทั่วโลก จุดประสงค์ของ web นี้จะเป็น web ที่ใช้สานความสัมพันธ์กับเพื่อนเก่าที่เรามีอยู่ เช่นเพื่อนสมัยมัธยม หรือมหาวิทยาลัยที่รู้จักกันดี แต่ว่าไม่ค่อยได้มีโอกาสเจอตัวจริง แต่อยากจะรู้ความเป็นไปของเพื่อนซึ่งจะมีรูปถ่าย ข่าวสารใหม่ๆ ที่สมาชิกจะ post ขึ้นไปให้เพื่อนของตนได้อ่านทุกๆ วัน เรียกได้ว่า ระยะทางไม่ได้เป็นปัญหาต่อความสัมพันธ์อีกต่อไป

ถ้าพูดถึง facebook หรือ social networking web site ไปแล้ว และจะไม่พูดถึงอีก web หนึ่งที่ดังพอกันคือ www.myspace.com ก็กระไรอยู่ myspace เป็นอีกรูปแบบหนึ่งของ social networking ที่แตกต่างจาก facebook ตรงที่ว่า myspace จะเน้นไปยังการสร้างความสัมพันธ์กับคนที่เรายังไม่เคยรู้จักมาก่อน เราสามารถที่จะสร้างหน้า web page ของเราโดยการตกแต่งสีสันรูปถ่าย หรือแม้กระทั่งใส่เพลง หรือ animation เข้าไป เรียกว่าเป็น homepage ส่วนตัวบนโลก internet เลยทีเดียว

ผมเป็นอีกคนหนึ่งที่บางครั้งก็ติดหนัง TV series ของอเมริกา เช่น Heroes, Lost, 24 หรือ Prison Break ซึ่ง Series พวกนี้จะฉายเป็น Season แล้วก็ต้องรออีกหลายเดือนกว่าจะมีตอนต่อไปมาฉาย และที่สำคัญคือบางทีอาจจะต้องรอเป็นปีกว่า Cable TV ของเราจะเอามาฉาย แต่ตอนนี้ไม่ต้องเสียเวลารอขนาดนั้นแล้วครับ ทุกๆ ครั้งที่ TV Series ที่เราอยากดูฉาย เราสามารถซื้อมาดูเป็นตอนๆ ได้ทันทีที่ itunes music stores (www.apple.com/itunes) เราจะเลือกดูที่บ้านต่อเข้า TV จากเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ หรือจะดูผ่าน ipod ก็ได้ ไม่ต้องรอซื้อ DVD ปลอมอีกต่อไป

ลองวิ่งและวัดระยะทางกับ Nike plus ถ้าคุณเป็นอีกคนหนึ่งที่ตั้งใจในวันปีใหม่ว่าจะลดน้ำหนัก หรือเพิ่มความแข็งแรงให้กับร่างกายคุณด้วยการวิ่ง คุณสามารถเลือกซื้อรองเท้า Nike Plus ได้ที่ www.nike.in.th รองเท้าพิเศษที่ว่านี้สามารถที่จะเชื่อมต่อกับเครื่อง ipod Nano ของคุณผ่านทางคลื่นวิทยุ และบอกข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับการวิ่ง ระยะทาง เวลา แคลอรีที่ใช้ไป รวมไปถึงเก็บสถิติของการวิ่งทำเป็นกราฟไว้ให้ดูหรือคุณจะเลือกวิ่งแข่งกับคนอื่นๆ ทั่วโลกก็ได้

พูดไปถึงการออกกำลังกายแล้ว ผมพบ web site ของคนไทยที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับเรื่องการออกกำลังกายชื่อ http://www.theryo.com/index.html ซึ่งได้ให้ข้อมูลที่คุณควรรู้เกี่ยวกับการจัดการวางแผนการออกกำลังกายและสร้างกล้ามเนื้ออย่างถูกวิธี รวมทั้งมี Webboard ให้ถามตอบอีกด้วย

สำหรับนักเล่นกอล์ฟ ผมเชื่อว่าทุกๆ ครั้งที่คุณออกรอบแล้วหยิบเอาหัวไม้หนึ่งมาใช้ คุณก็คงอยากรู้ว่า shot นั้นตัวคุณเองตีได้ไกลแค่ไหน ซึ่งบางทีคุณอาจจะตกใจเมื่อรู้ว่าระยะจริงที่คุณทำได้ กับความคิดคุณต่างกันอย่างยิ่ง ถ้าคุณเป็นคนที่สงสัยเรื่องนี้ คุณอาจจะเลือกใช้บริการจาก google map ได้ง่ายๆ เพียงแต่จำไว้สักหน่อยว่าลูกตกอยู่ที่ไหน แล้วก็กลับบ้านไปเปิด http://maps.google.com/ ดู เพียงแค่ค้นหาสนามกอล์ฟที่คุณออกรอบให้เจอ แล้วเอาหมุดไปปักบริเวณที่คุณเริ่มต้นทีออฟ และอีกจุดหนึ่งบริเวณลูกตก คุณก็สามารถคำนวณระยะทางได้อย่างค่อนข้างแม่นยำว่าคุณตีได้ไกลกี่หลา

อีกเวบหนึ่งที่มีประโยชน์อย่างมากกับการค้นคว้าหาข้อมูลไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องอะไรก็ตาม คือ สารานุกรม Internet ชื่อ www.wikipedia.com ซึ่งเป็นความร่วมมือโดยสมัครใจของผู้ใช้ internet ทั่วโลกที่มีความรู้ในเรื่องใดเรื่องหนึ่ง แล้วสนใจที่จะเขียนเผยแพร่ความรู้นั้นๆ ให้คนอื่นได้ร่วมใช้ ซึ่งเปิดโอกาสให้ทั้งผู้เขียนและผู้อ่านสามารถที่จะแก้ไขปรับปรุงข้อมูลเพื่อความสมบูรณ์และถูกต้องของเนื้อหานั้นๆ ตลอดเวลา web site นี้มีทั้งภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาไทย

สำหรับคนที่ว่างสุดๆ ผมแนะนำให้สมมติตนเองเป็นนักสืบ แล้วลอง Search ชื่อตัวเองใน google www.google.com ดูว่ามีชื่อของคุณปรากฏอยู่ใน web site ไหน หัวข้ออะไรบ้าง ยิ่งคุณเป็นคนสำคัญเท่าใด ก็มีโอกาสเป็นไปได้ที่จะเจอชื่อของคุณใน web site ต่างๆ มากขึ้น บางทีอาจจะมีคนอยากรู้จักคุณแล้วก็ลอง search ดูอย่างที่คุณกำลังทำอยู่ก็ได้นะครับ จะได้ไม่ตกใจว่าทำไมคนแปลกหน้าเขารู้จักตัวเราได้มากขนาดนี้

I couldn’t help but agree more with Jon Ungphakorn on the hypocrisy of the Thai society on our conservative view of sex and marriage, while living our lives very differently otherwise, published in the Bangkok Post, on Wednesday 9 January 2008. He claims the official version of our society is far from reality, and that prostitution has to be accepted and resolved through social reform and created the rights for sex workers.
My view is that the officials are turning blind eyes on the massage parlour and bothel industry by taking bribery. As far as I know, the only people that suffered from this outlaw of prostitution is the sex workers themselves, not us that drive pass the massage parlour everyday or living in the world greatest sex city, or gets a funny look when you said you are from Thailand. It’s imcomparable to what these sex workers have to go through. These sex workers are not protected by our society or by our law. What happened to them, e.g. when they get abuse, goes undetected, unprotected by our society. They have no where to turn to if they needed help, as they would be arrested if turning themselves in to the authority. It’s the flaw in our system.
Another point which I wanted to raise is the illegal abortion issue. Many people in Thailand have a strong belief that abortion is considered a form of murder, but not everyone has to share the same belief. The belief shouldn’t be forced onto the general public and practice. The choice should be given to the women themselves whether they are capable of raising the children or not. It will eliminate further problems down the line for both the mother and her child, and lift some burden off our society. They should provide different version of free… websites, like freebooks.com to build a library for the community, or freemedicalsupply.com for medical aids. Different types of questions can be used on each website, like who wrote The Pride and Prejudice, or what is insulin? and gets sponsorship from publishing house and pharmaceutical companies.
