ATT00022What is your experience with dating a Thai guy? Do you think they are romantic? As for me, my husband is a half Thai half Indonesian, and I have to say he is very romantic. He’s definitely very thoughtful with all the things in my life no matter how big or how insignificant. I have a feeling that it’s kinda boiled down how you see your parents love each other when he grew up. His dad is extremely devoted to his mother, and vice versa, and I have to thank them for setting such a good example to Chris. :)

Anyway, back to the story, the other day, I’ve recieved a forwarded email from a client, who I suspect is subtlely nudging me to find him a date quickly. The email was about a foreigner guy who proposed to his Thai girlfriend on the big screen in front of Central World. American might see nothing special to this event, as you often see people proposed in the baseball stadium or something with a grand gestures. But this is extremely unusual in Thailand. I have not heard much stories about how people proposed over here. It is usually about how big or grand the dowry is, and how many guests they have at the wedding….boring. Most Thai I suspect would propose in the courtesy of their homes (where they feel most comfortable), in the car (while driving!??!) or in the restaurants? I don’t know, like I said, I haven’t heard much about how Thai guy proposed. (FYI, Chris proposed to me in the restaurant, and it was a warm fuzzy feeling). Even my clients, who seems to get married more frequent these days, tend to leave the details about how the guys proposed out of the picture. Most of the time, it was more like a discussion….oh, I think we should get married next March, what do you think?…follow by, which bank should we get the morgage from to pay for the condo???….

So, I posted the question, “Is Thai Guy Romantic?” on Facebook, and got some interesting responds:

I think in general Thais aren’t romantic… they are once introduced to romance but essentially it comes down to the ‘everyone living under one roof’ issue. Whilst most farang on a ‘night in’ would like to light some candles, put on some soft music and get snuggled with a movie before going to the shower for some tender loving the average Thai … Read Morehouse hold would leave the couple stood outside the bathroom whilst grandma is in their having a ‘kee’! The rooms in Thai houses have NO mood lighting and usually feature some 4 foot long kitchen fluorescent strip light lighting the place up like a football stadium and if the sound of grandma passing sticky rice and the floodlights weren’t enough to kill the mood then there is usually the 1987 calender of HM the King staring down at you or hundreds of pics of mum and dad attached to future board! hahaha! Sorry if I generalise and sure this doesnt go for all households. :) Talking of the king I wish you a speedy recovery sir. Anyway that is why farang see Thai’s lacking in the romance department – as for the Thai men? well I cant say as I havent tried to cuddle up to a Thai boy yet underneath the stars. I do believe Thais can be romantic, just need to be shown. I took my rug up onto the apartment roof one night with candles and a bottle of wine and the ex gf was nearly in tears as we chatted under the moon. At first she thought I was mad but a little bit of romance can warm the coldest of hearts :)

Thanks for sharing your perspective with me Mark. I could imagine a lot of these happening in many homes.
Now what do the Thai guys has to say?
Nikki Assavathorn

hahahha… I am only playing. I do know of some romantic Thai boys. Romance is lacking here in Thailand a little which is strange because traditional weddings are so romantic. Just need to leave mum and dad and get your own condo ;) hehhe
Mark

They’re right. Thai guys aren’t romantic (enough)
Potchanalak

I beg to differ. If you look hard enough it’s there, but surfaces in a different way from what is considered conventional in the western context =)
Ed

Thats the problem Ed, the culture makes you have to look hard. It is shocking how the older Thai generation and their stagnant views, beliefs and traditions ruin and polute the young minds. Romance is walking hand in hand in the park with your partner. Here if you do that she is labelled a ‘bad girl’ or ‘bar girl’. You shouldn’t need to look hard … Read Moreto see romantic gestures. A couple in love should be able to kiss, respectfully and tastefully if they want. It is cute, lovely and I when I see this I smile inside at their love for each other. I just read on here earlier though that a Thai boy proposed on the big screen at Central! Yay! Good lad, now thats romantic… The rest of these boys need to put down their comic books and learn from this big hearted guy… :D Good luck to them both… I love romance :) < << Nikki (already pointed out to him that the guy is a foreigner)
Mark

Oh Ed, I dont mean everyone, just generalising. I know there are hundreds of romantic Thai guys… just romance is a big thing in the west and so I guess when we come here and dont see couples holding hands, dont see people kissing or being (tastefully) affectionate in public it seems like something is missing… I think the fact you commented Ed shows you must be a bog romantic too. Good one. Love makes the world go round..
Mark

I think “farangs” and Thai men perhaps view “romantic” from different perspectives….
Tim

Which argument do you support? Do you think Thai guy is romantic?
